MOTHERHOOD AND MATERNITY

Motherhood is a complex issue for most women, whether or not you choose to have children. Social expectations and ideals about motherhood impact women with children and women without. For women with children, the demands of parenting and the pressures of the “ideal mother” affect nearly every aspect of life. For women without children — either by choice or by circumstance — the pressures are no less acute, and often lead to shame, grief, the need for explanation, or negative impacts on self-worth. Infertility treatments can compound the pressures.
At Evenson Counseling, we understand the complexities of motherhood. Our counselors have specialized training in dealing with maternity, perinatal mental health, postpartum depression, issues around infertility, and the social pressures put on women related to motherhood.
TRAUMA & ADVERSE EXPERIENCES

Trauma affects the lives of many. Trauma is not simply the experience of an adverse event – it is your individual reaction to this event. Individuals develop traumatic reactions to numerous life events: loss of a loved one, neglect, emotional abuse, adverse childhood experiences, bullying, being a target of prejudice, or living with an alcoholic or abusive partner, as well as sexual assault, war or being a victim of violence or crime. Adverse and traumatic experiences can be overwhelming and impact our innermost sensations and our relationships with others.
If you find yourself replaying past events, having nightmares, having difficulty sleeping, or dealing with negative thoughts and mood, you may benefit from trauma-focused therapy. At Evenson Counseling, we will help you understand how trauma may have adversely affected your mind, body, and life. You will learn how to overcome the limitations that trauma has placed on your life and well-being.
LGBTQ2S+ IDENTITIES & WELL-BEING

Evenson Counseling welcomes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, two-spirit, and questioning individuals. We understand that our LGBTQ2S+ clients have unique needs as individuals and in relationships. And even though social attitudes are changing, continued stigma, harassment, discrimination and violence towards individuals related to gender identity and sexual orientation are challenges faced by many. We offer counseling to address inner conflicts, relationship issues and difficulties in communities. If you or someone you care for is struggling with issues like these, contact us for help.
RELATIONSHIPS

Turn Toward Each Other – that’s our philosophy at Evenson Counseling. We are social beings. We need to depend on significant relationships in our lives for emotional and physical well-being. When we don’t feel heard, feel like we don’t matter to our loved one, or can't trust and depend on our partner, our minds and bodies feel threatened. If you feel disconnected from your partner or don’t feel loved the way you used to, come to Evenson Counseling. We will work with you and your partner, helping you strengthen your emotional connections. In therapy you will gain awareness and skills to help you ask for what you want and need and become a compassionate listener with you partner. Learn to nurture both yourself and your partner, build a healthy relationship — and turn toward each other.
YOUNG ADULTS

Young adults face distinctive challenges. Choosing a career. Opting for more education. Transitioning into adulthood. Figuring out who you are.
In today’s world, there are even more challenges: constraints caused by pandemics, anxieties over climate change, doubts about future financial security, social unrest related to identity, and the omnipresence of social media. It’s no wonder that young adults are struggling to manage the here and now, and worry about the future.
We can help. While we can’t change the world, we can help you build skills to navigate it and develop the emotional strength to face the challenges ahead.
ADOLESCENTS

Teens face unique social, emotional, and cognitive challenges as they transition from childhood to adulthood. These formative years become more complicated when issues like anxiety, depression, and identity make 13- to 19-year-olds feel isolated and misunderstood. If unresolved, these issues can snowball into lasting behavioral and relational difficulties.
It's tough to feel alone when navigating the new personal, academic, and societal pressure teens face. But a supportive, nonjudgmental person who understands the complexities of these years can help. Given the right tools, teens are capable of reaching their ideal selves.
At Evenson Counseling, we specialize in helping adolescents and young adults achieve their goals by learning to define their own sense of self and develop tools to overcome any challenge this phase of life might throw their way. We use a variety of techniques to meet clients where they are socially, cognitively, and relationally to start building healthy long-lasting mental wellness habits now.
